Show and hide subtasks on a Jira board
A hidden subtask can be collapsed under its parent, excluded by a filter, or outside the board’s scope. Start by opening the parent. Jira’s newer team-managed software board can show an expandable subtask list on a card, so an older guide that expects every subtask to be a separate card may not match your board.
Subtask visibility
These checks apply to company-managed and team-managed software boards. Configuration paths differ where noted.
-
Confirm the parent and child
Open the parent work item and check its subtasks. Record a child key so you can look for that exact item. A linked task is not necessarily a subtask. -
Expand the parent on the board
On the newer team-managed board, use View settings to enable or disable subtasks on cards, then expand the parent’s child list. On a company-managed board, inspect the configured swimlanes and expand the parent or story lane where present. In the backlog, use the available expand/collapse controls for child work. -
Clear filters before changing configuration
Remove board search text and active filters. Check the parent’s placement in the board or backlog, then confirm the child’s status is included in the board mapping. -
Use a filter when you want a different work selection
For a parent-level review, issuetype NOT IN subTaskIssueTypes()excludes subtask work types from query results. A company-managed board admin can use a quick filter; a team-managed space admin can use a custom filter. Verify how the current board renders nested children: filtering results and collapsing a child list are different controls. -
Check the result with one family
Use a parent with one finished and one unfinished subtask. Confirm the intended detail appears, then clear the filter and check that both children remain accessible.
Good to know
Use the least disruptive control for the task.
- Collapse a list when you only want less visual detail. Change filters when you want a different set of work items.
- Do not delete subtasks or remove their work type to clean up a board view.
- If a child is missing from Jira search as well, investigate access and the work item itself before editing board settings.
- Jira Cloud and Data Center instructions can differ. This guide covers Cloud software boards, including the newer nested-card experience.
FAQ
Will hiding a subtask remove it from reports?
Collapsing a visible list does not change the work item. A report’s own filter determines which work it includes.
Why does a subtask not have its own independent sprint?
Subtasks belong to a parent work item. Check the parent’s sprint placement when diagnosing where its children appear.
