Show custom fields on Jira board cards

On boards in company and team-managed spaces, each person can use View settings to show or hide supported fields for themselves. A board administrator in a company-managed space can also add up to three additional fields through Card layout.

Company and team-managed spaces

The personal field-toggle flow is the same in both space types. Company-managed boards also have an administrator-only Card layout for adding fields that are not available as personal toggles.

  1. Open View settings

On the board or backlog, select View settings in the top-right.
  2. Toggle the available fields

Show or hide the fields Jira offers, such as work type, work item key, epic, linked work items, priority, assignee, or card cover. Team-managed spaces also offer due date and labels. The board updates for your view only; there is no shared save step.
  3. Add a custom field in a company-managed space

To add a field that is not available as a personal toggle, a Jira, space, or board administrator can select more (•••) → Board settings → Layout → Card layout and add up to three fields. On Scrum boards, the backlog and active-sprint layouts are set separately.

Good to know

Before you customize Jira cards:

  • View settings are personal in both space types. Your field toggles do not change which fields other people see and do not require administration access.
  • The three-field limit applies to company-managed Card layout. This shared board configuration accepts up to three additional fields and requires Jira, space, or board administration.
  • Team-managed spaces do not have the same custom-field picker. They provide the personal fields Jira lists in View settings, including due date and labels.
  • Not every custom field is available. A company-managed field must be available to the board's work items to appear in Card layout.
  • Scrum boards split layouts. Backlog and active-sprint card layouts are configured separately, which is easy to forget.

FAQ

How do I add a custom field to Jira cards?
First check View settings for a personal field toggle. To add another field to a board in a company-managed space, open Board settings → Layout → Card layout and add up to three extra fields. This requires Jira, space, or board administration. Team-managed spaces do not provide the same arbitrary custom-field picker.
Why can't I add more than three fields to a Jira card?
Three additional fields is the limit for Card layout on a board in a company-managed space. Personal View settings in both space types provide a separate set of supported field toggles.
Why isn't my custom field showing as an option in card layout?
Check that the field is available to the work items covered by the board's filter and field context in the company-managed space. Team-managed spaces do not provide the same arbitrary custom-field picker.
Can I show different fields on backlog cards versus sprint cards?
Yes, on company-managed Scrum boards. The card layout for the backlog and the active sprint are configured separately, so you can show different fields in each.
Do I need to be an admin to change card fields?
No administration access is needed to change the supported personal field toggles in View settings. Adding up to three fields through a company-managed Card layout requires Jira, space, or board administration.
How does BetterBoard handle card fields differently?
BetterBoard lets any user toggle any field onto cards with a live preview: no three-field limit and no admin gate. It reads your Jira fields directly, so even custom fields from different spaces appear as options on a multi-space board.
